In teams where tasks are split, the early game devs and designers might not be as aware as later writers and marketting about gender representation since it's not in their main scope. Different moments in the pipeline means different teams with different sensibilities. ![]() (Edit: What I mean is that the decision to make a "woman" character becomes a "decision" from the beginning, rather than an addition when characterisation comes. Hard to re-interpret it as "man" as in "men in blacks". The naming's really an issue for the early serie since it locks the whole pipeline. Starting from the Megaman X series, it gave them more freedom by using Element+Animal as name base rather than Thing+"-man", and as you can see, that could give them freedom to arbitrarily give robots a different gender/sex later in writing/marketing without making it part of the earlier visual design (which can more easily go wrong with game devs). ![]() It's probably inspired from the comics male heroes being more predominant in their mind, since the "-man" suffix is even used in japanese (well, the prefixes are also in english so maybe that's a moot point). ![]() Click to shrink. But in context, it's true that robot having no gender definitely defaulted to them being thought as male, highlighted by Splash Woman.
